- MKTO is an American pop-rap duo formed by Malcolm Kelley and
Tony Oller. The name MKTO comes from the initials of the two members' first names but has also been said to stand for “Misfit Kids and Total Outcasts,” a theme reflected in many of their songs about individuality, youth, and rebellion. The band emerged in 2012 and quickly rose to fame with their upbeat blend of pop hooks, rap verses, and relatable lyrics.
Both members had prior experience in acting before launching their music career. Malcolm Kelley was known for his role as Walt on the hit TV series Lost, while Tony Oller had appeared in Gigantic and As the Bell Rings. Their shared experiences in the entertainment industry brought them together, and their friendship evolved into a creative partnership focused on music.
In 2013, MKTO signed with Columbia Records and released their debut single, Thank You, a satirical anthem that critiques societal expectations and celebrates youthful independence. The track resonated with audiences worldwide and was followed by Classic, their biggest hit to date. Classic became a global sensation, achieving multi-platinum status and topping charts in countries like Australia and New Zealand. It celebrated timeless love and paid tribute to old-school icons like Sinatra and Beyoncé.
Their self-titled debut album, MKTO, was released in 2014 and featured a mix of high-energy tracks and emotional ballads, highlighting the duo's musical range and chemistry. The album received positive reviews and established them as one of the prominent new pop acts of the time.
After a brief hiatus in 2017 and pursuing individual projects, MKTO reunited in 2018, releasing new singles like How Can I Forget. Despite later parting ways with Columbia, they continued to release music independently, maintaining a loyal fanbase.
MKTO’s style blends pop, hip-hop, and R&B influences, with lyrics often reflecting themes of youth, love, and self-expression. Their charismatic dynamic and catchy tunes have left a lasting mark on pop culture, making them a memorable act of the 2010s.
